Zakat is the fifth pillar of Islam, mandatory upon every
individual owning wealth beyond the Nisaab threshold. The Zakat
amount is required to be spent on one of the following eight
categories:
“Zakat is only for the poor and the needy, for those employed to
administer it, for those whose hearts are attracted to the
faith, for freeing slaves, for those in debt, for Allah’s cause,
and for needy travellers.” (Quran, 9:60)
Zakat Nisaab
Zakat is mandatory upon every Muslim whose wealth (cash, gold/silver, investments etc) exceeds the minimum threshold amount from the following:
Gold Nisaab
87.48 grams (7.5 tolas) of gold
Silver Nisaab
612.36 grams (52.5 tolas) of silver
